Ornette Coleman & Rosario Giuliani Quintet

Today after almost two weeks of beautiful weather the heavens opened and it poured! The temperature has dropped to almost half of what is was yesterday and at the sound check the front part of the stage was soaking - the photographers pit was almost under water.

Fortunately by about 6.30pm the rain stopped and the temperature rose a little and everywhere started to dry out.

The main concert of the evening was Ornette Coleman and his current line up of Ornette, Denardo and two bass players - the program lists three: Tony Falanga, Al McDowell and Charnett Moffet but one was obviously missing and I wasn't able to quickly find out which it was although I think it was Al McDowell.

Ornette played short sharp pieces, and for him quite melodic with the two bassists (one playing upright and the other electric) playing weaving melodies and patterns to his sax and trumpet lines) and Denardo was his usual rock solid self at the back on drums - very interesting and also very entertaining.

The opening concert was the Rosario Giuliani Quintet featuring the great trumpeter Flavio Boltro. The set was taken from Giuliani's last album 'Anything Else' and like Stefano Di Battista who played earlier in the week, the set was high energy with some excellent soloing from all the band. Boltro has a great trumpet sound and his interplay with Giuliani and pianist Dado Moroni was excellent. Holding the whole thing together were Benjamin Henocq on drums and bassist Luca Bulgarelli.

This was an excellent double bill full of energy, surprises and great improvisation!

This was an excellent festival of music with Carla Bley, Hancock, Shorter et al. This particular evening - even with the weather as described - was THE outstanding event. I was not expecting too much from Ornette Coleman but was completely sold. This one will stick in my memory a very long time. Rosario, also outstanding and Boltro - not need to comment.

These shows were video taped. Where can be buy the tapes. Help me out here, please.
