A big vocal night tonight with mother and daughter team Dee Dee Bridgewater and China Moses both performing tributes to the vocal stars of yesterday.
China Moses, bubbly effusive and obviously very talented covered the career of Dinah Washington in words and music - adding, where appropriate enough of her own personality to make the show really enjoyable and above all great fun. She has a great voice and she has learned from her mother fantastic stage craft so without hogging the stage she commanded it and kept the pace up to a great climax, a duet with her mother (and pooch).
The encore featured Dee Dee and China (and dog) together on stage - an emotional time for all!
Dee Dee's show was a homage to Billie Holiday which she has been touring around the world - With a fantastic band and arrangements of these so well known songs, the show was as slick and entertaining as her daughters. It is so easy to spot where China discovered her stage craft!
After the vocal extravaganza in the Antique Theatre a total contrast was to be found in the midnight club where another family affair was pounding out boogie woogie piano jazz. Martin Pryker and daughter Sabine (on drums) were very entertaining and the crowd warmed to their Austrian charm and dexterity with this early jazz material.
So after the vocals and the washboard last stop was the Jazzmix tent down by the Rhone where New Yorkers Jason Lindner and his band were playing into the early morning.
Featuring Edition Records very own Mark Guiliana on drums (he is on the next release Phronesis Alive) and the great Colombian Harp player Edmar Castaneda and bass vocalist Panagiotis Andreou this was high energy music from very accomplished musicians. Well worth staying up for!!
