The launch party (at the Barbican) was great fun and attended by the great and the good of theLondon Jazz scene
Nice surprise to see the ever lovely Cerys Matthews deep in conversation with photographer David Redfern and John Fordham (a great supporter of Edition) who will be doing his blog on the Dave Stapleton Quintet's next big performance - Midem 2009!
The concert at the Barbican was 'Jazz Voices' which went down a storm so I was told later. I moved across town to the South Bank where Joanna MacGregor and Dhafer Youssef were playing with the Britten Sinfonia. I saw the second half of the performance and as always Dhafer was superb, playing with bassist Peter Herbert and stunning percussionist Satoshi Takeishi and the collaboration with Joanna playing and conducting was excellent.
Britton Sinfonia leader Jacqueline Shave
Oliver Weindling from babel - I could go on, but I'm sure you get the idea!!
Also at the South Bank was Keith Tippett - playing three separate but linked concerts. Duets with Stan Tracey and Julie Tippetts and a piece with the Elysian String Quartet - sadly no photography is allowed in the Purcell Room so I did not get in to listen to any of it - however Jez nelson said the concert was absolutely outstanding (it has been recorded for Broadcast on Radio 3 so I will listen later to the podcast).
The action then moved to Ronnie Scotts Club, where Jazz on 3 were recording a live show.
Artists featured were Tom Cawley's Curios, Vincent Herring, The Millenial Territory Orchestra and lastly Ken Vandermark with Mark Sanders and Barry Guy.
It was a fantastic two and a half hour show and loads of artists dropped in after their giggs for an impromptu jam session, Ian Shaw Lianne Carroll, Julian Siegel to name a few.
Amongst a packed house were Jazzwise Editor Jon Newey and Mike Flynn, The dynamic duo that is Nod Knowles and Tony Dudley-Evans,
